Overview

Do you want to know if TURGEN is a tool that you need? Review its most prominent use cases.

All use cases assume you have a PC or Mac, 8-bit Atari computer, and a data recorder.

Record software on tape using an ordinary tape recorder connected directly to the PC

TURGEN was originally created for this use case.

Equipment needed: Ordinary cassette recorder, connecting cable.

  • Create a project and populate it with project items
  • Connect the input of the tape recorder to the output of the sound card using a cable
  • Select project items
  • Insert a blank tape in the tape recorder, position the tape
  • On the tape recorder, start recording
  • Generate and send signal to the sound card
  • When the signal generator has finished, stop the recording

Record software on tape using Tape Self-Extractors (TSFX) and a data recorder

If you don't have an ordinary cassette recorder (these are hard to obtain), you can still record on tape using your data recorder.

Equipment needed: A powerful universal cartridge, or a disk drive emulator that can be connected to the Atari computer simultaneously with a data recorder.

  • Create a project and populate it with project items
  • Select project items
  • Create TSFXes from the project items
  • Copy the TSFXes to an SD card
  • Place the SD card in a powerful universal cartridge or a disk drive emulator.
  • Insert the cartridge in the cartridge slot of the Atari computer or connect the disk drive emulator
  • Insert a blank tape in the data recorder.
  • Launch the TSFX from the universal cartridge or disk drive emulator
  • Press PLAY+RECORD on the data recorder
  • Press START to record the software on tape

Transfer software to the Atari computer using a cassette adapter and a data recorder

Equipment needed: Cassette adapter

  • Create a project and populate it with project items
  • Connect the input of the cassette adapter to the output of the sound card of the PC
  • Insert the cassette adapter in the data recorder
  • Select project items
  • Instruct the Atari computer to read data from the data recorder
  • Press PLAY on the data recorder
  • Generate a signal and send it to the sound card.

Create WAVE files that hold signal representing the software

  • Create a project and populate it with project items
  • Select project items
  • Generate and store signal to WAVE files

Create WAVE or CAS files from multiple project items (tape sides)

  • Create a project and populate it with project items
  • Select project items
  • Select the Create Tape Sides tool
  • Setup parameters (duration of the tape side, gaps between files, output format, etc.)
  • Create the tape sides
